Jim joined the Royal Navy when he was 16 and served for 12 years.

In 1947, he served on HMS Gambia and visited Shanghai and then Hiroshima. While in Japan he was given a rifle and two Japanese prisoners. He had them cleaning the ship's brass work. They were not very good at it so they had to do it over.

My thanks for Jim's son Peter. Peter is a Falklands War veteran and says he was so proud to show his father his campaign medal. Peter served 22 years on SS Canberra.
