Able Seaman Tom Swatton, service number D/SSX898606, served in the Royal Navy from 1951 to 1961. He served on HMS Gambia for the 1952 to 1954 commission. He had the nickname of "Gentle Giant".
Other ships Tom served on were HMS St. Vincent (1951 - 1952), HMS Gambia (1952 - 1954), HMS Cambridge (as driver, 1954 - 1956), HMS Eagle (1956 - 1959), and HMS Royal Arthur (as driver, 1959 - 1961).
After leaving the navy Tom became a chef and later was the Resident Warden of a Caravan Park near Plymouth. Tom was a member of the HMS Gambia Association.
